In The Beginning

September 22, 2005. 8:52 a.m.
Jillian was delivered at 39 weeks via C-Section without complications. She cried prior to cutting the cord and once in the warmer only required tactile stimulation. Her Apgar scores were 9 at one minute and 9 at five minutes. She was alert and active. She had slight grunting respirations with a small amount of crackles on her right lung field which cleared after suctioning, and otherwise appeared normal. Her birth weight was 7 pound 9 ounces, her length was 20.5 inches and her head circumference was 13.75 inches. She began breast feeding prior to 11:00 a.m.

9:28 a.m.
She received Erythromycin 0.5% eye ointment to both eyes.

9:30 a.m.
She received a Aquamephyton 1 mg (Vitamin K) injection in her left lateral thigh.

Hepatitis B vaccine REFUSED.

September 23, 2005
Uneventful.

September 24, 2005. 1:00 a.m.
Awake, to nursery for assessment. PKU completed. Hearing test completed (passed), tolerated procedure well. Skin appeared slightly ruddy, eyes slightly jaundice. Discharged home at 3:37 p.m. Weight was 6 pounds 15 ounces.

September 26, 2005
Redness and small amount of yellow drainage noted around left eye.

September 27, 2005
10:00 p.m. Left eye red and swollen closed. Copious amount of green drainage. Called pediatrician. Directed by pediatrician to bring Jillian to the Emergency Room.

10:21 p.m. Culture and Gram stain showed a Staph infection.

10:45 p.m. Cefotaxime 150mg IM injection given. Order to recheck in 10 hours.

September 28, 2005.
8:30 a.m. Returned to the Emergency Room for recheck

8:45 a.m. Cefotaxime 150mg IM injection given.

September 29, 2005. Jillian continues to exhibit jaundice.
1:30 p.m. Blood drawn for Neonatal Bilirubin Test.

2:28 p.m. Result: H 8.8 Reference range: 0-6.0 MG/DL.
(parents notified September 30, 2005) No treatment was indicated by pediatrician... We made sure Jillian was exposed to a lot of sunlight. Jaundice appeared to resolve within a few days.

September 30, 2005. Received results of Jillian's Newborn Screening Test.
Galactosemia (Total Galactose), Homocystinuria (Methionine), Hypothyroidism (Thyroxine), MSUD (Leucine), PKU (Phenylalanine), and Toxoplasma IgG all were within normal range.
